I've been listening to Cassani's records and am really impressed with this one - perhaps a slightly slower speed, and suddenly the soubrettish squealer (but with terrific technique) whom I couldn't imagine taking these major roles on stage, has become an accomplished and believable soprano leading lady. It shows what re-thinking these old records can do for a singer - like the revolution in understanding of de Lucia's recordings over the last few decades. Great work - thank you!

It is possible; as we know for old acoustic records there was no standard playback speed, especially Pathe records generally range from 80 to 130 rpm. You go by ear and taste to correct the possible tone but, in addition to technical skills, you would need a good knowledge of the voices and interpretative habits of singers who were once much more imaginative (and inconsistent?) than in modern times!

Wow! Thanks so much for this. I was looking for it. I attended one of these performances (Alfredo was then sung by Neil Rosenshein) on January 28 1986. Gasdia and Miller = just stunning, Zeffirelli staging = magnificent. What memories!

Merrill is in absolutely spectacular form. His Di Proveza is simply heroic vocally.

She is one of the greatest Traviatas after 1960 to me. Great super strong lyric soprano borderline spinto in some performances. She is close to a perfect Traviata.

That is a true high Aflat that Merrill sings so impressively at about 1:08!.
